Safe Dog Obedience Training – My Story
All dogs could use some training; they are after all wild animals that we domesticated. And since they are born with the love of pleasing not only will you be happier with your dog if he is trained but your dog will ultimately be happier as well.
When training your dog keep this phrase in mind – No Dog Fails Dog Training and There Is No Such Thing As A Dog That Can Not Be Trained. If a dog is not learning it is up to you to find a new technique that they get.
Dog Obedience Training – My Story
I have a wonderful dog named Molly. She is a lab terrier mix, the terrier part being pit bull. The most beautiful dog you will ever see. She has big brown eyes and her coat is a shiny amber color with white on her tummy.

I found her at the human society and she was instantly friendly. She adored my little boy and he adored her. They were like a match made in heaven and how could I say no to the pleading eyes of my son and soon to be dog.
She was still a puppy, they figured around 9 months old. We brought her home and immediately found out that her previous owners let her on the couch. No problem I thought, I’ll just train her to stay off of the couch. On the plus side she was pretty much house trained and I thought I was getting away with something. Isn’t that one of the hardest things to do? Turns out, I really had no idea.
She was cute and seemed good so we didn’t bother with keeping her in a crate when we left the house. A week into it all was going well but the second week things started to change.
I came home from work one day and to my dismay the living room carpet was torn to shreds. I mean there was a hole three feet long and a foot in a half in width. She even got the padding. There were pieces of carpet everywhere and she didn’t even have the decency to dig a whole somewhere that I could throw a rug over. It was smack dab in the middle of the room. I had a digger!
And not only was she a digger but she chewed up my old baseball glove from when I was a kid, stole a whole loaf of bread off of the counter, and decided to relieve herself in the middle of my son’s room. And to make matters worse, when I walked in she was sitting on the couch with her tail wagging. So much for my teaching her how to stay off of the couch.
My first thought was this dog has got to go! Not only does she jump on furniture, she digs, chews on things, was apparently not house broken, and stole food off of the counter.
Did I also mention that she jumped on anyone who came through the door and if they were in a 200 yard vicinity of our house she would run from window to window barking and whining with her hair sticking up on her back? I wanted her GONE.
What in the world was I going to do with a dog that had obedience problems that ranged from seek and destroy to ear splitting barking?
Problem was in that first week and a half my family fell in love with her and so did I. There is no denying the attachment we formed to Molly. It became time for dog obedience training. Searching the internet it became apparent that there are many ways to train your dog and not all of them are safe or friendly and it became my goal to have a well behaved dog by using positive dog training.
It took work but in the end that is what I have. I have an obedient dog who loves us and we love her. She no longer digs, steals food, goes potty anywhere but outside, jumps on the couch or people, or continuously barks at the people and animals outside.
I have gone through numerous training manuals on dog training. With the sheer amount of stuff I did to try to make my dog listen and behave there were only two dog training books that really help me train Molly to become a valued member of our household as opposed to the dog from you know where.
The first is actually a series of videos so you can not only see how you should be teaching your dog the new commands but you can also hear how you should be saying them as well. It’s called Dove Cresswell’s Dog Training Online.
If you are serious about having a well behaved dog then you should definitely check out this dog obedience guide:
Dove Cresswell’s Dog Training Online
The second guide that I used is called Clicker Training – 4 Secrets Of Becoming A Super Trainer.
This is by far the best book on clicker training you are going to find.

Whether you are interested in training your dog with clicker training or prefer to use a more traditional approach both of these books offer positive dog training which is the only way you should ever consider training your dog to be an asset to the family as opposed to a hindrance.
Remember all dogs can be trained and they can all learn to listen. If I could train my Molly who had every problem imaginable then I know you can train your wonderful dog too.
